Film and TV - Overview
Over the years there have been several screen
adaptations of The Wind in the Willows. There
has been quite a variety of approaches to these
films - some have used actors, some have used
animation, some have used gel models, some have
attempted to remain faithful to the original book,
some have been major departures from it.
Additionally there have been a few attempts at
sequels. The overwhelming majority of what has been
produced was produced by a company called Cosgrove
Hall in the 1980s. The section below elaborates on
the Cosgrove Hall productions. The section at the
bottom covers all known DVDs related to Kenneth
Grahame and The Wind in the Willows.
Cosgrove Hall
Cosgrove Hall
Productions produced a total of two movies
and 65 episodes of The Wind in the
Willows.
The Wind in the Willows movie was
first screened on 27th December 1983.
From
1984 to 1987, the first fifty-two episodes
were screened in four series of thirteen.
(First Series - November 1984, Second Series
- December 1985, Third Series - December
1986, Fourth Series - December 1987) These episodes won first place in the
Animated Series Section of the 1987 Chicago
Festival.
The show
disappeared in 1988 but was revived by a
second movie, A Tale of Two Toads,
the following year - December 1989. In March 1990 a final series
of thirteen episodes was screened under the
show's new title Oh! Mr Toad!. This
series won The Observer Children's Award for
1990.
The show was
aired in Australia on the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation (ABC-2) from the
mid to late 1980s, and only the six to eight
episodes of the final series were aired in
1993.
In the
USA, the movie was not shown until March 18
1989, on the PBS network. A Tale of Two
Toads was shown in October 1990, split into
two parts. (I am not aware as to whether the
television series has ever been shown there.)

All DVDs - Various Production
Companies
As stated
earlier, there is a wide variety of approaches to be
found among the adaptations of The Wind in the
Willows. This is compounded by production
companies licensing their films to other companies
who then market it with a different cover, and
sometimes even with a different title. Unfortunately
that has led to a lot of confusion for anyone
wishing to buy a DVD. The listing here
explores the different films and highlights where
the same film has appeared under different guises.
Included in the list is a documentary DVD on the
life of Kenneth Grahame.
